"The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" is a Tony Award-winning musical from 2005 with music and lyrics by William Finn and book by Rachel Sheinkin, with additional material by Jay Reiss . It was conceived by Rebecca Feldman, based on her original improvisational play, “C-R-E-P-U-S-C-L-E”
This hilariously satirical musical follows six overachieving adolescents vying to win the spelling bee competition “that could change their life forever” while struggling with social alienation, absent or overbearing parents, and the onset of puberty.
The show's creative team has crafted a clever, yet moving production about a quirky and charming cast of outsiders for whom the spelling bee is the one place they can fit in and stand out at the same time. Along the way, they learn that winning isn't everything, and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser.
One unusual aspect of the show is that it features audience participation, as four actual audience members are invited to compete in the spelling bee alongside the characters. This makes for unexpected surprises as well as guaranteeing that each performance of the play will be a completely new and unique experience.
The Broadway production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” was nominated for six Tony Awards in 2005 and ended up winning two, including Best Book of a Musical.
