John Quigley, the acting secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, was one of the attendees at the Great Lakes Children's Water Festival. The layers of chopped ice, sprinkles, ice cream and Sierra Mist might have been a stretch as replacements for  porous rock, sand, gravel and groundwater, but they sure tasted good.

Yahn Planetarium

This is a 3-D rendering of the planet Pluto.Since its discovery in 1930, the planet Pluto has gone unseen to the human eye, but that will change come July. That’s when the New Horizons spacecraft will reach the planet after a nine-and-a-half year journey.

April 11: Math Seminar: A Physical Method to Compute e^x

Behrend Section:
School of Science

In a first-year calculus course it is often difficult to see how the standard and important transcendental functions such as sin x, cos x, e^x, and ln x are computed. Later, we learn that they can be expressed as Taylor series and hence can be approximated by polynomials. The trig functions, of course, have a physical interpretation in terms of trigonometry and therefore can be computed physically.
