“Psycho Beach Party”
Auditions for the Spring 2014 theatre production, ”Psycho Beach Party” by Charles Busch will be held in the Studio Theatre on Tuesday January 21 and Wednesday January 22 from 7:00 - 10:30 p.m., with call backs held on Thursday January 23 from 7:00 - 10:30 p.m. The show is being directed by Behrend Theatre faculty member David Vegh.
The Studio Theatre is located on campus adjacent to Turnbull Hall and across from the Glenhill Farmhouse. ALL Behrend students, faculty, and staff are welcome to audition!
“Psycho Beach Party” is a wildly campy and over-the-top gender bending horror-comedy. It parodies both 1960s Beach Party movies like “Gidget” and “Beach Blanket Bingo” as well as the psychological thrillers of Alfred Hitchcock.
It’s Malibu Beach, 1962. Chicklet is a perky teenage tomboy who desperately wants to be part of the surfing crowd, despite her nerd-like tendencies and the protests from her over-controlling mother. It also doesn’t help that she is suffering from a multiple personality disorder. Meanwhile, a series of bizarre attacks have been taking place at the beach. Could there be some connection?
Auditions will consist of reading scenes from the script, which will be provided at the auditions. As a number of the play’s roles were originally written to be played in drag, men in particular should be prepared to read both a male and female role. See character descriptions for all roles below. If you are interested in obtaining a copy of the script to help you prepare your audition, please contact David Vegh at email@example.com.
Performance Dates: April 4-6 and 10-12. Evening performances at 8pm, Sunday matinee at 2pm.
Rehearsals will begin on Tuesday February 4 and continue until the show opens. You should expect to be available a minimum of three (3) nights a week for three (3) hours per night for rehearsals.
If you would like to request a specific audition time, please email the director, David Vegh, at firstname.lastname@example.org with your availability (i.e. Tuesday after 7:30 p.m., Wednesday before 8:00 p.m.) and he will get back to you with a time-slot. Walk-in auditions are welcome.

Chicklet: Skinny, perky 15-year-old high school girl (modeled after "Gidget", originally played by Sandra Dee) who is determined to learn to surf even though it is a male-dominated sport. A traumatic experience in her past has given her a multiple personality disorder where she "transforms" into other people, including an evil dominatrix and a grocery store clerk.
*** Originally written to be played by a male in drag, but open to either a female or male in the role. If a female is cast, we will obviously cut the "topless" scene. Demanding role: Must be able to shift quickly and comically between Chicklet's many multiple personalities.
Star Cat: Handsome male surfer and former psychology student. Dropped out of college to follow his true calling, being a beach bum. Becomes Chicklet's love interest.
Berdine: Chicklet's best friend. Female. Spunky and hopelessly nerdy intellectual. Not a "beach body". Narrates parts of the play through her diary entries.
Mrs. Forrest: Chicklet's mother. Based on Joan Crawford (watch clips of "Mommy Dearest"). Harshly protective, controlling and more than a little insane. *** Leaning toward a male in drag for this role, but open to either sex.
Bettina Barnes: Female, glamorous B-movie star of cheesy horror movies. Hiding out at the beach after running away from the set of her latest film. Longs to be considered a "serious actress".
Kanaka: Male, Big Kahuna and surfing guru. Think Patrick Swayze in "Point Break".
Marvel Ann: Sexy high school chick with a stuck-up attitude. A real man-eater. ***Can be played by a female or a male in drag.
Yo-Yo: Male surfer, amateur chef and hairstylist. Best friends with Provoloney.
Provoloney: Scrappy male surfer with hidden screenwriting ambitions. Best friends with Yo-Yo.
Dee Dee: Smaller role. Attractive beach chick.
Nicky: Smaller role. Attractive surfer dude.
Possible walk-on roles and dancers available, TBA.
*** While I haven't noted it above, female actresses interested in auditioning for any of the male roles, go for it. Likewise, men, if there is a female role you are interested in not specifically mentioned as a possible "drag role" above, feel free to audition for it!
