College Author Placed in WordTheatre's Limelight (8/16/09)
"Hunters," a short story by Eugene Cross, a faculty member in the college's B.F.A. in Creative Writing program, was read by actor Xander Berkeley during "Thrill or Peril: Tales of Adventure," an evening of live storytelling that took place in mid-August at M Bar in Hollywood, Calif. "Thrill or Peril" was presented by WordTheatre, a nonprofit that fosters love of language and literature by pairing actors and short stories at events in Los Angeles, New York City, and London. In addition to Cross, works were read that evening by noted authors Susan Orlean, Paul Rudnick, Henry Louis Gates, Anne Fadiman, and Karen Russell.

Dr. Robert Speel wins 2008/09 Council of Fellows Excellence in Outreach Award (5/4/09 )
Congratulations to Dr. Robert Speel, associate professor of political science, on winning the Council of Fellows Faculty Excellence in Outreach Award for the 2008/09 academic year. Dr. Speel will be recognized for his achievement at the first Faculty Organization meeting in the fall.
The Penn State Behrend Council of Fellows Excellence in Outreach Award was established in 2000 to recognize that faculty member who in the opinion of students, colleagues, and community leaders most truly embodies the outreach mission of the college, the community, and an academic profession.

Congratulations Cathy Mester(5/4/09)
Congratulations to Ms. Cathy Mester, senior lecturer in speech communication, who received the 2009 Council of Fellows Excellence in Teaching Award. The Penn State Behrend Council of Fellows Excellence in Teaching Award was established in May 1969 to recognize that faculty member who in the opinion of students, alumni, and colleagues most truly fills the role of an effective teacher. The award was first presented in 1970.

Congratulations to Dean Baldwin, professor of English, who was presented the Joe D. Thomas Award for Distinguished Service to the College English Association during the CEA‘s 70th annual conference, which was held March 26-28 in Pittsburgh.

Tom Noyes Awarded 2009 Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship (2/13/09)
Tom Noyes, assistant professor of creative writing at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, has received a $5,000 Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA) 2009 Individual Creative Artists Fellowship in the literature-fiction category.
