English is among the most versatile of majors. Graduates acquire a unique set of skills that will prepare them to thrive in many career fields including: education, research, sales, advertising, marketing, creative and technical writing, publishing, public relations, and non-profit organizations.
Penn State Behrend offers several ways for students to get involved and gain valuable hands-on experience. Lake Effect is a nationally-recognized journal, publishing works selected and edited by Behrend English and Creative Writing students. Students consider submissions of original poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Many English majors write for and edit the college’s weekly student newspaper, The Behrend Beacon, and its accompanying web page. Academic credit can be obtained for work on The Beacon. Roundtable Society is a student-led organization dedicated to the arts, including film, theater, and creative writing. The Roundtable Society sponsors readings, discussions, theater excursions, and annual events such as the Cold Turkey Reading and The Evening of Dubious Taste.
