The Sam and Irene Black School of Business at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the School of Business. The Director serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School and reports to the Penn State Behrend Chancellor’s Office. The Black School of Business is accredited by AACSB International and offers nine undergraduate majors and the graduate MBA and the Master of Project Management programs. It is the administrative home of the internationally ranked online MBA program. It is supported by a $28 million endowment, which supports undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, library and information technology resources, executive education and outreach activities, several faculty chairs, and several centers of excellence including the Economic Research Institute of Erie, Center for Financial and Consumer Outreach, Partnership Erie, Enterprise Resource Planning, and RFID. The School is located in a new $30 million facility with the School of Engineering with which it has developed a unique partnernship.
Candidates must possess leadership, strategic planning, and budgetary experience and have demonstrated potential for academic and administrative leadership. Candidates should possess a terminal degree in their discipline and have a teaching and research record with credentials commensurate for appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure in one of the School’s academic disciplines. Exceptional candidates without a terminal degree will be considered with a proven record of success as a senior executive in industry. The ideal candidate will have evidenced involvement with external stakeholders; development experience; industry experience; strong skills in written, oral, and interpersonal communication; commitment to shared governance; a record of progressively increasing administrative responsibilities; experience with recruitment and retention; experience in innovative program development; assessment experience in program, personnel, and external accreditation; and be a strong supporter of diversity.
Essential duties of the Director include the following:
- Oversee the academic, scholarly, service, and outreach mission of the School.
- Supervise the curricular development, implementation, and assessment of undergraduate and graduate academic programs.
- Provide a strategic vision for the School and implement strategic-planning initiatives.
- Recruit and support a faculty committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching and a productive program of research.
- Oversee the School’s promotion and tenure process, as well as the annual evaluation process for the School’s faculty and staff members.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with prospective employers and existing corporate partners.
- Assist in the recruitment and retention of students.
- Enhance the visibility of the School and its mission of offering a rigorous professional education.
- Work with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations to secure major gifts and endowments for the Black School of Business.
- Manage the School’s budgets and endowment funds.
- Provide visible and active leadership for the College’s commitment to diversity.
- Pursue an active program of outreach to work with businesses and other stakeholders to help solve real-world problems.
Students and faculty enjoy the extraordinary beauty of the College’s 854-acre campus in the suburbs of Pennsylvania’s fourth-largest city. The College is comprised of four academic schools (Engineering; Science; Humanities and Social Sciences; Sam and Irene Black School of Business) employing 258 full-time and 60 part-time faculty members. The institution’s 4,600 students can choose from 34 baccalaureate majors and 22 minors, six associate degree programs, and two master’s programs. The Penn State Behrend campus includes Knowledge Park, a 200-acre research and development park where opportunities exist for developing partnerships with industry for fundamental and applied research and technology transfer services.
There are more than 50 buildings on campus, including residential housing for 1,650 students, an athletics and recreation center, chapel, observatory, and child care facility. More than 110 student clubs/organizations as well as an award-winning speaker and chamber music series enrich campus life. A strong NCAA Division III athletics program features 22 varsity teams that compete in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.

The Sam and Irene Black School of Business at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College is seeking qualified applicants for a tenure-track position in Accounting at the assistant, associate or full professor level (Ph.D. or DBA; ABDs considered at the instructor level) starting August 2013. Exemplary candidates with an appropriate focus and qualifying for an appointment at the full professor level will be considered for one of the school’s vacant endowed chairs. All areas of interests will be considered for an appointment at the assistant or associate level. A record of relevant industry experience and professional certification are desirable. Both high-quality teaching and an active program of scholarship are expected.
The Black School of Business is accredited by AACSB International. It occupies a new $30 million facility, and its $20 million dollar endowment provides significant support for the School’s programs. The endowment helps fund undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, library and information technology resources, outreach activities, four faculty chairs, as well as new programming initiatives.
Teaching Responsibilities: Teaching load will consist of the equivalent of 15 credits for the academic year and include undergraduate and MBA courses in accounting that utilize the candidate’s expertise. This position will also include developing and teaching online and/or blended online courses primarily at the graduate level.
Research Support: Includes guaranteed summer research support, full access to major statistical packages and databases, as well as funded travel to professional meetings. A partial listing of available databases includes: WRDS, CRSP, Compustat, Eventus, Lexis-Nexis, I/B/E/S, PHLX data.
Salary: Negotiable and competitive with other AACSB-accredited schools of business.

The Sam and Irene Black School of Business at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College is seeking applicants for a non-tenure track position in economics. A Ph.D. or ABD is preferred (candidates with an appropriate Master’s degree and a strong teaching record may be considered). High-quality teaching is required and an active program of scholarship is expected. Preferred fields include applied business economics and/or health economics. The appointment will begin August 2013. The initial appointment will be for two years with the possibility of yearly renewal after two years.

Teaching Responsibilities: The appointment will be made at the rank of lecturer or assistant professor depending on qualifications and experience. The teaching assignment is equivalent of 24 credits per academic year. Teaching includes one section of an upper-level undergraduate course each semester and, three sections of introductory microeconomics per semester. There is also a possibility to teach one or more additional upper-level undergraduate courses in the candidate’s fields of expertise.
Research Support: Includes funded travel to present papers at professional meetings, research support, office computers, and access to major statistical packages and databases.
