April 3: David Shumate Reading

Date(s):
Apr 3 2014 - 6:00pm
Location:
Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel

David Shumate will read from his latest book when the Creative Writers Reading Series returns April 3 to Behrend.The Cider Press Review describes David Shumate’s poetry as “innate lyricism and imagism rarely seen even in conventional lyric free verse.” This spring Shumate brings that unique style to Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.

Shumate will read poems from his latest book, “Kimonos in the Closet,” as part of the Creative Writers Reading Series at Penn State Behrend on Thursday, April 3. His 6 p.m. reading and the reception that will precede it are free and open to the public. Both events will be held in the Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel.

Shumate’s most well-known collection of poems, “The Floating Bridge,” was released in 2008 and received considerable praise, even from acclaimed author Jim Harrison.

“I was deeply taken by David Shumate’s ‘The Floating Bridge,’” Harrison said in 2008. “There is none better working now at this very difficult genre, the prose poem.”

Shumate’s first book, “High Water Mark,” won the 2003 Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize. “Kimonos in the Closet” was released in 2013, and his work has been featured in a handful of publications, including North American Review, Prairie Schooner, Mississippi Review, Mid-American Review and Lake Effect, Penn State Behrend’s journal of the literary arts.

The Creative Writers Reading Series is produced by Penn State Behrend’s B.F.A. in Creative Writing degree program with support from the Clarence A. and Eugenie Baumann Smith Fund. For additional information call 814-898-6108 or visit Behrend.psu.edu/readings.
