Award-winning journalist Laura Ling will speak April 2 at Penn State Behrend.Laura Ling has made a career out of telling other people’s stories. Now it’s time to hear hers.

Ling, an award-winning journalist and host of the E! Network’s “E! Investigates,” will discuss her career at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Wednesday, April 2. Ling’s talk, titled “Journey of Hope,” is part of the college’s Speaker Series and begins at 7:30 p.m. in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union Building. Admission is free and open to the public.

Throughout her career, Ling has covered a variety of topics, including slave labor in the Amazon, Mexico’s drug war, Internet censorship in China, and women’s rights in Turkey. In 2009, she was detained by North Korean soldiers along the Chinese-North Korean border while reporting on the trafficking of North Korean women. Ling was arrested and held captive for 140 days before being granted a special pardon and returning to the United States.

Ling continues to tackle difficult issues in her current role as host of “E! Investigates.” The show is a documentary series that explores topics such as teen suicide and the challenges faced by military spouses.

Ling co-created “Breaking it Down,” a documentary series on MTV that aired between 1999 and 2001. Her work has also appeared on ABC's Nightline, NBC and PBS, and she and her sister co-authored “Somewhere Inside: One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and the Other’s Fight to Bring Her Home.”
