Behrend Women's Commission Annual Summer Picnic: Please join the Behrend Women's Commission for a free summer picnic. This is an opportunity to reconnect with friends and colleagues across the campus in a relaxed summer setting. All members of the campus community are invited to attend. The menu includes hamburgers, veggie burgers, hotdogs, potato salad, baked beans, potato chips and pretzels, chocolate chip cookies, lemonade and ice water. “New Frontiers in Cancer and Health” 2013 Behrend Woman of Impact Talk and Luncheon: Please join the Behrend Commission for Women and the Chancellor’s Office as we honor Dr. Danielle Duchini, Erie Breast Oncologist and Surgeon, with The Behrend Woman of Impact Award. This award is bestowed annually upon a woman who has been a significant part of the Behrend community and who has made a meaningful contribution to society in her professional life. Dr. Duchini graduated from Behrend in 1994 with a B.S. in biology. She attended the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Medical College. She completed a prestigious breast fellowship at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. where she focused her training on the specialty of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment: breast radiology, surgical techniques for breast conservation, plastic and reconstructive surgery, genetic testing, risk assessment, oncological innovations in breast cancer treatment and complementary medicine. Dr. Duchini is now the sole certified, fellowship-trained breast oncologist in Erie. She has been interviewed in outlets including CNN about the state of the U.S. health care system. Dr. Duchini will talk about her career and about new advances and challenges in the treatment of breast cancer within a rapidly changing health care system. “Working with Immigrants: A Conversation with Sister Annette Marshall,” The Erie Women Making History 2013 Lecture & Lunch: All members of the Behrend community are invited to attend the Behrend Commission for Women sponsored Erie Women Making History 2013 Lecture & Lunch with Sister Annette Marshall. Sister Annette Marshall is the current Executive Director of the Inner City Neighborhood Art House, which provides classes in the visual, performing and literary arts for children. Sister Annette has also worked with the Benedictine Sisters Sanctuary program since 1988. She has supported numerous refuges from El Salvador and Guatemala, many of whom subsequently settled in Erie. Sister Annette has also been part of Hands Across Borders, which has sponsored a sister city project in El Salvador since 1990. In her talk, Sister Annette will discuss her experiences and address the opportunities and challenges for immigrants in Northwest Pennsylvania. A light boxed lunch will be served. "Tales of a Turkish Girl...A Journey in American Academics": All members of the Behrend community are invited to attend the Behrend Commission for Women sponsored Faculty Speaking Series in Gender Issues talk given by Dr. Pelin Bicen. Dr. Bicen is an assistant professor of marketing in the Sam and Irene Black School of Business. Her passion is in researching and teaching marketing strategies, mainly in innovation strategy and new product development process. Dr. Pelin has a bachelor's degree in mathematics, but found herself in advertising after graduation, where she developed a passion for marketing and creativity. In her talk, Dr. Pelin will share her story, focusing on the challenges and surprises of being an international faculty member. Desserts and coffee will be served. Behrend Commission for Women Annual Diversity Luncheon: All members of the Behrend community are invited to the Behrend Commission for Women's annual diversity luncheon in the McGarvey Commons, Reed Building. Ms. Ann Scott, Vice President for Community Outreach - Erie Insurance and Penn State Behrend Alumna ('99), will give a presentation concerning diveristy in the workplace.
