Week 1 (June 16-20)

 

Beginner Model Rocketry   

Explore the exciting world of model rocketry. Following strict safety rules, participants will build a reusable model rocket they will launch during class and then again at home. Participants will design their own launch system which will include a wooden launch pad and electronic ignition system. Family members will be invited to watch participants successfully launch their rockets on the final day of class.

Multiplication Made Fun through Hoop Dance NEW      

Explore multiplication through hoop dance. Learn multiplication strategies while simultaneously learning hoop dance techniques. Participants will design and make their own hoops, write their own multiplication word problems and use these original word problems to create their own dance using various hoop techniques learned throughout the week.

Surviving the Outback        

This outdoor, hands-on class will take place in the Penn State Behrend Outback. Participants will learn wilderness survival skills, shelter building, fire making, and basic hunting and stalking.

Introduction to Robotics    

Come and explore the world of robotics. From toys, to robots used in industry, to the robots used in the space program, robots are everywhere. We will be experimenting, programming, creating and completing projects using the Lego Mindstorms system, VEX Robotics Kits, TriBot, Robosapien, I-Cybie, First-Bot, Junk-Bots, and more.

ABCs of Martial Arts

Students will learn the Agility, Balance, Coordination, and the other twenty-three corresponding letters that teach self-confidence, self-control, self-discipline, and self-defense. Practice a combination of kicks, punches, and parries, and learn to escape from the most commonly applied street holds. Also learn verbal Judo (how to redirect behaviors with words). Comfortable clothing required!

Reptiles Rule

It may not be love at first sight, but reptiles have much more to offer than their looks.  Children are sure to warm up to these captivating, cold-blooded critters through, 4D puzzles, crafts, a visit from the Erie Zoo outreach reptiles and many more interesting activities.

Come join us for a fun-filled week of scrapbooking, stamping, and more. Learn creative techniques while creating keepsakes that will last a lifetime.

Camping Club NEW

Dare to explore! Participants will have an outdoor adventure and experience the joy of camping. Hike, play camp games, practice camp safety, explore Four-Mile Creek. Have a great time while learning about team leadership and survival skills. Sturdy shoes and socks are required.

Cryptozoology           

Spend a week in the world of hidden animals.  We'll look at the more famous cryptids like sasquatch and lake monsters, and learn the best ways to investigate their existence.  You'll learn the history of cryptozoology, famous cryptozoologists, and some "found" cryptids as we study zoology and ecology to decide just how likely it is that any of the creatures are roaming the world.  Answer that question yourself by the end of the week!

Adventures in Acrylics       

Acrylics…. do you want to become a better painter? Do you want your paintings to look more real? You can do it! This class is designed to inspire and encourage you to create paintings you’ll be proud of. You will gain confidence painting on several types of surfaces using acrylics.

Week 3 (July 7-11)

 

Golf: Beginner Level 1        

Boys and girls who are just learning to play golf will practice short-game skills like putting, chipping, and swing basics while having fun! YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN CLUBS TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CLASS. Clubs will not be provided. A driver or fairway wood, a putter, a pitching wedge, and a 5-, 7-, and 9-iron are recommended. This is an outdoor class, so remember to bring your sunscreen!  Individual skill levels will be addressed.

Simple Machines NEW        

Simple machines are everywhere.  Learn how the six classical simple machines – Lever, Wheel and Axle, Pulley, Inclined Plane, Wedge, and Screw - work individually as well as together to create more complex machines.

Drawing Adventures           

If you are a young artist excited about drawing and learning new skills, this is the class for you.  Tired of just using one pencil? Want to learn how to shade and make your drawings look real?  Then step inside my classroom and prepare for a drawing adventure.  We will study animals, people, landscapes, cars, and trucks.  Wow...put that in a week of learning how to use pencils, colored pencils, and pens.  Add you interest in drawing and learning more; and you're ready to embark on a great art-filled week!

Making Video Games!         

Ever played a video game? Ever wanted to make *make* a video game? Participants will utilize a program that uses very basic programming to teach STEM concepts, engage students in technical development activities, develop logical thinking and reasoning skills, and above all, have fun!

Golf: Beginner Level 2        

Young golfers with some experience will have a chance to concentrate on swing and short-game skills improvement. Golf clubs are NOT provided and must be brought by the participant. Face Painting 101 NEW       

This class is designed for the budding artist whose canvas cannot be limited to a simple piece of paper and doesn't mind getting a little messy! Participants will learn basic shapes, brush strokes and techniques to paint on the face and body while taking turns being the artist and the canvas. This class will provide a fun opportunity for participants to learn and practice beginning skills in the art of face and body painting.

Engineering Bridges with K'Nex   

Ever wonder why you only see a few bridge designs? Using K'Nex building materials, come explore the mechanics of why bridges are designed as they are. Students will build bridges of increasing span, place weight on them, and learn how to make them both stronger and both lighter.

Survivor: Behrend Edition NEW    

This is a hands-on class where participants will learn important survival skills including shelter building, first aid, fire making, knots and ropes use, orienteering and navigation skills, clue awareness, and much more! Participants will also get a chance to meet and interact with local search and rescue specialists.

Paper Making           

Make your own paper! Recycle that homework, old book, and junk mail into beautiful homemade paper and make many different usable items.

Start Your Engines  

Design, construct, test, and race a variety of homemade cars while learning about speed and friction. Engines will be designed using fans, mousetraps, balloons, and good old breath.

Acting for the Stage 2         

This class picks up right where Acting for the Stage I lets off. Participants will learn through games and acting exercises how to bring the characters in a script to life. Laugh and learn many of the same techniques your favorite actors use while preparing and performing their roles. The class will culminate with a performance of one of the acts on the last day of the class.

Bio Blitz: Epic Insects NEW

Discover the amazing diversity of insects hiding in plain sight!  We will spend the week blitzing the outdoors for insects of all shapes and sizes and learn the basic skills to identify many common species of the insects we find.

Trash to Treasures NEW    

Combine science and art, conserve and recycle while creating fun useful objects. Engage in daily hands-on lessons designing and using upcycled products.

Instead of a day at the Spa, let's make it a week at the Spa. Enjoy making your own spa products and then have fun using them during this week of girly fun.

Dance to the Music NEW    

Dance to the Music will introduce students to several types of dance including, line, aerobic, ballroom, theatrical, ballet and jazz. Each class participants will spend time warming up muscles, improvising favorite songs and learning proper technique. Dance elements taught throughout the week will be used in a final performance.

Engineering MythBusters 1

Based on Discovery Channel’s hit TV show “MythBusters,” this class explores engineering concepts “just to see what happens.” Which type of racing car goes faster? What are the different kinds of bridges are they safe, and how do we build one? How does an electric circuit work? We will have design contests, explore the college’s engineering facilities, and have lots of fun. This class is for all girls and boys who want to learn about the different fields of engineering.

Stained Glass Mosaic         

Design and create your own beautiful mosaic masterpiece! Students will learn the history and techniques of mosaic art then create their own mosaic artwork using stained glass and ceramic tile.

Castle Crusaders     

Kings, Queens and Knights….Oh my! Learn about the medieval times: how people live and dressed. Construct your own castle and build a model catapult.

Rainbow Loom Jewelry and Crafts NEW 

Interested in learning how to create jewelry and other crafts with a Rainbow Loom?  This class will teach several different bracelet/necklace styles, how to add accessories like beads and charms, earrings, and create more complex designs like small animals, dolls, and change purses.  Bring your own loom if you have one! (one will be provided if not)
